Bamboo Restaurant Pavilion, Sangai Festival, Manipur

Location: Moirang khunou, Manipur

A distinctive bamboo pavilion constructed for the Sangai Festival at Moirang Khunou, Manipur. Designed by Huidrom Associates and executed by CanBoo, Dept of Tourism Govt of Mainpur the structure was inspired by the traditional Manipuri fishing trap 'Loo'. Built using Balcooa bamboo, Melocanna (Muli) bamboo, and bamboo mat boards, the pavilion served as an open restaurant during the festival and was later used during G20 events in Manipur.

Project Challenge

Creating a distinctive pavilion that could serve as an open restaurant during the Sangai Festival and later adapt for G20 events, while reflecting Manipuri culture. The design needed to balance structural strength, sustainability, and cultural symbolism, using bamboo as the primary material inspired by the traditional fishing trap Loo.

Our Approach

The team employed Balcooa bamboo, Melocanna (Muli) bamboo, and bamboo mat boards, combining traditional craftsmanship with engineered techniques. This approach ensured durability, cultural resonance, and eco‑friendly construction, resulting in a pavilion that was both functional and iconic.
